5 Ways to Celebrate Your Pet’s Life After Their Passing

5 Ways to Celebrate Your Pet's Life After Their Passing - Hachiko Memorial Statue in Tokyo, Japan

Our pets are undoubtedly members of the family. When our furry companions pass away, it can be painful and there are certainly going to be periods of mourning. But the best way to begin healing is to celebrate the life you and your pet shared!

The following are five meaningful ways to celebrate your pet’s life.

1. HAVE A MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR YOUR PET

A memorial service is a great way to honor your pet’s life. You can hold the service at your home or let professionals at a pet cemetery or crematory manage the details. Wherever you hold the service, invite family and friends who were close to your pet and understand your pain. Consider having custom memorial seed packet favors created to give to your loved ones to plant and continue honoring your pet’s life long after they’re gone.

2. PUT TOGETHER A PHOTO ALBUM OR SCRAPBOOK

Have too many photos of your pet on your phone? Don’t we all! Put them to good use and put them all in a special photo album you and your loved ones can revisit again and again. We know the memories can be painful to go through at first, but one day you’ll be glad you gave yourself this gift.

You can also opt for a scrapbook, saving photos and important things (or pieces of them) that your pet loved. Maybe fabric from a favorite toy with a photo of your pet playing with it, or perhaps their tags or other special identifiers. The possibilities are endless. If you’re looking for some inspiration, Pinterest has some great ideas here.

3. GET A PAINTING OR PORTRAIT OF YOUR PET MADE

Having a custom painting like on these Etsy listings would be a beautiful way to remember your pet. Find the right place in your home you want to showcase your little loved one to order the perfect size, and use a photo you loved the most. You could also include something like a shadowbox alongside it with your pet’s memorabilia.

4. DONATE TO A CHARITY

You could do this after your pet passes away, but it would also be a great idea to donate around their birthday as well. This would be incredibly special if you adopted your pet from a specific organization that you can continue working with years after your furry loved one is gone.

5. VOLUNTEER

Speaking of honoring where you adopted your pet, consider volunteering. This is also great if you’re very interested in animal welfare. While our pets can’t live forever, we can continue helping other animals that desperately need our attention. Your pet may not know, but the animals who could use your love and attention will!

Honoring the loss of your pet

Losing our pet is painful and trying to figure out ways to honor them may not feel easy. But you can keep it as simple or celebratory as you want and need to. Remember that the joy we felt while they were still with us is always worth celebrating.
